MUSIC MONDAY: Harmony. Yum.

Have you seen this?!

It came out two weeks ago and as usual, because I am Ms. Late Poster, I’m only blogging about it now. (I mentioned it on Twitter, though. You should totally follow me. New knowledge everyday, guaranteed!) LOL.

Anyway. My ears died and went to heaven when I first listened to this. They had to resurrect and die again ’cause I kept listening to the song a couple more times in the succeeding days. I love this cover so much! Lorde’s song is already quite catchy on its own, but when Pentatonix did this with that TDF harmony. Ugh. My feels.

I love love love love love harmony. It just makes everything better. I was actually dubbed the resident harmony maker in our pop group. I also spent 8 years of my life (and counting) in the Chorale. My dad also ALWAYS adds harmonies to songs he hears on the radio (or wherever)… so you can basically understand where I’m coming from.

Listening to Pentatonix’s songs, in general, actually gives me so many feels. I’ve always admired people who can do ahmahzing things with their voice. I’ve also always had dreams of being part of a group like this — with each member being increasingly sensitive of their part in a harmony. Through the years, though, I learned that this isn’t something you can expect in an instant. It takes practice. And inborn talent, I guess. LOL. I’ve found people who fit the bill, but I’m not so sure they’re quite interested in the other kind of group I dream of becoming a part of — a vintage close harmony group.

Last year, I had an Overtones/Puppini Sisters phase (which never really died, just that I was so SUPER obsessed with them that time). This year, I heard of Baihana — a local close harmony group. This was the first video of theirs that I watched:

Pretty fabulous, right?! Found myself stalking their SoundCloud a few days ago just because. Super loved this:

HUHU THE AWESOMENESS I CAN’T. I seriously believe I was born in the wrong era. Or that I was a flapper girl in my past life. Huhuhuhu someone please be in a close harmony group with me!!!

Harmony. Yum.

MUSIC MONDAY: Postmodern Jukebox

This vintage take on Miley Cyrus’ We Can’t Stop made its rounds on the internet last month:

Seeing how everyone at that time was gagging over Miley’s classy VMA performance, this version was welcomed with open arms. I think partly because, aside from it sounding so quirky tune-wise, it also represented an era that was modest and classy. Which is the complete opposite of, ehem, Destiny Hope’s current phase. Har.

Anyway, I checked out this guy’s (Scott Bradlee) YouTube account. Turns out, he and his friends had covered a lot of songs already. Mostly making jazzy/bluesy renditions of contemporary pop songs. It’s pretty amazing! Like, this guy could possibly be my frand in real life ’cause of our similar tastes in music. (I still honestly feel like I live in the wrong era.)

Check out these other ahmahhz videos:
Call Me Maybe (Carly Rae Jepsen)1920s Cover
Beauty And A Beat (Justin Bieber & Nicki Minaj) 1940s Cover
Come And Get It (Selena Gomez) 1940s Cover

Non-Postmodern Jukebox:
Sk8tr Boi (Avril Lavigne) Motown Cover

Puhhreeety cool! BRB dressing up like a flapper girl. LOL.

MUSIC MONDAY: Classical Music And Then Some

You guise, check out these fab videos I watched over the weekend. One is a classical take on Lady Gaga’s song, Applause (which I find extremely catchy, BTW); the other, sheer awesomeness by Juilliard alumni. Sigh.

I’m not sure if you know this but I LOVE classical music. Being part of the Chorale from elementary to high school + being friends with the school’s orchestra members + listening to the Harry Potter soundtracks exposed me to, and made me appreciate, the genre. When I became part of a pop orchestra in college, my love for it just grew, as well as the appreciation for jazz/big band music and pop-classical fusions. Although I don’t completely understand the technicalities behind it, I still appreciate it and can pretty much distinguish the good from the bad, the simple from the elaborate. 🙂

Another thing I love is when classically-trained musicians tackle popular music. It just makes me all giddy inside, the idea of them taking on simple pop pieces and combining it with their skills and knowledge, to basically produce musical bad-assery. It’s like, “Lady Gaga song? Btchplz. Lemme add some violins to that. Here.” *throws newly-Sibelius-ed sheet music (or not, ’cause most of them can play by ear)*

Sigh. My underdeveloped right brain says HELLO while silently weeping in a corner.

Speaking of classical music, concert season is starting for the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra! Their opening night is this Friday already, 8PM, at Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo. They’ll be playing the following pieces:

Dukas – Fanfare from La Péri
Liszt – Les Préludes
Vivaldi – Flute Concerto
Monti – Czardas
Guzman – Flutes of the World
Tchaikovsky – Symphony No. 6 in B Minor “Pathétique”

EEP! Excited for Czardas please! Let’s go! Let’s go! Let’s go! See you at the Cultural Center of the Philippines this Friday and in the months to come! 😀 Here’s the  schedule for the rest of the season, FYI:

Yay, classical music! <3

MTV VMAs 2013: Bye, Bye, Bye!

So, like, let me bring back my 12-year-old self for a bit while we talk about this year’s VMAs.

But before that, a quick recap (of the stuff I actually cared about): Lady Gaga’s performance was theatrically stunning, as always. Taylor Swift was apparently caught on cam mouthing something like “Shut the f up” while One Direction was presenting an award onstage (which her BFF Selena won, btw). Miley’s performance became the stuff of people’s nightmares. Taylor Swift won Best Female Video for I Knew You Were Trouble and indirectly said something about Harry Styles in her speech (classy). One Direction won Best Song of The Summer for Best Song Ever. Macklemore, Mary Lambert, and Jennifer Hudson sang about equality. Adam Lambert and his beard presented an award. JGL presented an award (with that voice). Katy Perry performed Roar under the Brooklyn Bridge.

But probably the most brilliant and most electric of all would have to be JUSTIN. FREAKIN’. TIMBERLAKE’S. PERFORMANCE.

(Here come the 12-year-old feels, beeteeduhbs.)

So that was what? A 20-minute non-stop performance by the President of Pop, yes? Can I please just give you an accurate .gif of what my face was like while I was watching this?

No, correction, there is no accurate .gif. But when he came out, I was like:

And then I was like:

And when *NSYNC came out, I was just like:

And when they started performing, I was all:

The precious thing about it was seeing the crowd’s reaction to the performance. The camera showed Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, and One Direction’s reactions and just, THINK ABOUT IT. Before there were all these acts, there was *NSYNC. Before Gaga’s theatricality, Taylor’s break-up songs, Selena’s eye candy videos, and 1D’s hold on the tweenyboppers of today, there was *NSYNC. THEY LISTENED AND GREW UP TO *NSYNC (not sure about 1D ’cause they’re like, half a decade younger than me). This isn’t new or anything; I’m sure older people would say the same thing about *NSYNC reacting to musicians who came before them BUT THIS IS MY CHILDHOOD OKAY SO BUGGER OFF.

But seriously, though, Justin Timberlake. I was such a huge fan of his (and *NSYNC) and Britbrit back in my elementary days. I even joined some Yahoo! Groups (yes!) that shipped JT and Britney. (I WAS CRAY, OKAY.) And seeing him excel at everything he tries his hand at is just really amazing and inspiring to watch. I didn’t think he’d be a good actor, but he got that one down pat. Couple it with his already awesome singing and dancing? I CAN’T, PLEASE. HE DESERVES THOSE TWO AWARDS. HE DESERVES. EVERYTHING.

MUSIC MONDAY: Manila Jam Sessions

If you don’t already know, I am a music muncher. Apart from that, I am also a singer. (This is actually the first time I’m calling myself that, as opposed to simply saying, “I sing”.) I am very much passionate about music, in fact, that back in college, I would often joke that I was a Bachelor of Arts major in Pops Orchestra, minor in Psychology.

Anyway, a couple friends and I have gotten together recently to jam and record songs. I blogged about one of those sessions a few months back (am I the best blogger in the world or what?!) and I’m proud to announce that we’ve done a few more recordings since then. We’ve also come up with the name Manila Jam Sessions — isn’t that quaint?

Here’s one of me, T, and P, covering Ho Hey by Lennon & Maisy (originally by The Lumineers):

If you like what you’re hearing, why don’t you head on over to our YouTube channel and subscribe? 😀 You may also follow us on Twitter — @MNLJamSessions. Apparently, we have a couple things lined up for the coming weeks.

So this is basically Shameless Self-Promotion #002.

Shameless Self-Promotion #003 would be for me to tell you about my SoundCloud account and how you should check that out as well, but you know, whatever. LOL.

Happy Monday, everyone! 🙂

The First Quarter Blur

Can you believe we’re three months into 2013 already? I sure can’t! Man, has time gone by so fast! Since the start of the year, I’ve only “written” five entries. FIVE. Someone’s obviously been a bad blogger. But anyway, I’ve been trying to get my life back on track recently, so I’m hoping to get more posts out soon. *fingers crossed*

So… the past two months have been cray. Extremely cray, but fun. If I were to categorize the events that have happened, I’d say they were a whirlwind of the following:

At the start of the year, I was commissioned by M to sing for a wedding, along with him, his mom, and his friend, K. It was fun! We rehearsed at the CCP so I felt extremely legit. HAHAHA!

The Wedding Singers

That wedding made me fall in love with Christina Perri’s Thousand Years, despite my aversion to anything Twilight. Hee. This was us rehearsing the song (emphasis on REHEARSING).

Aside from this wedding gig, I’ve also been blessed to work on some web design projects. Hopefully, I would be given more in the future. 🙂 I should probably redo my portfolio soon. Bah.

February has got to be my most favorite month; not because of love, but because of ART (hello, bitter statement! HAHAHA!).

Since February is Arts Month in the Philippines, I made sure to participate in a couple artsy things:

PASINAYA – Which was even more fabulous this time around (although, not necessarily in general), since I was assigned to head one registration booth. Last year, I was the girl who fussed over people walking by and touching artwork they weren’t supposed to touch. This year, my job was way more chill and was practically done in 5 hours tops. The rest of the time, I just went around watching performances by the UST Symphony Orchestra, Philippine Madrigal Singers, and Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra. So hurray! Can’t wait for next year’s Pasinaya. I hope they’ll be bringing in another festival soon ’cause last year’s was kinda fun. 🙂

COLOR IT LOVE – aka DLSZ Chorale’s concert for this year. The alumni sang Maroon 5’s Payphone. It was a really great arrangement. Hopefully we can do another pop song next year. :3

THE MAGIC OF JOHN WILLIAMS – Hogwarts Philippines was approached to participate in ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra’s re-staging of their John Williams concert. It was absolutely fantastic! I gots so much chillzzz. They’re the second Philippine orchestra I’ve heard do Hedwig’s Theme with such crazy precision, so you can only imagine how my heart was doing cartwheels. And the Imperial March? Man, that’s my jam. :))

T and I also met Karylle. She sang Can You Read My Mind in this concert. We stalked her backstage to ask her for a birthday message for J. She was incredibly nice. In return, I helped her fly. LOL.

PPO’S CONCERT – Okay, I’m cheating, this happened last January, not Feb. Watched with T and J. PPO had Dino Decena as guest musician; he was friggin’ amazing!!! He played Astor Piazzolla’s Ave Maria as encore and I basically just sat there, crying. So that’s that. Haha.

Fine. I can’t really escape it, even if I wanted to. The past two months (yes, not just February) were also months for love, platonic and non-platonic alike.

For the platonic part, there were the usual suspects: Pops, the Gansa Girls, and PKFC. 😀

Pops – We’ve started rehearsing again, for something big happening in a few months’ time. 😀 I also got to see the Christians (Christian and Christian Julia) again! We haven’t hung out in over a year, so that was definitely a big thing for me. 🙂

VDay – VDay was spent with T, E, M, and R… and a bit of P and A. LOLWHUT. We had dinner at the Early Bird Breakfast Club in BGC. I might blog about this separately but omg the food was amazing and the interior was to die for. Best VDay ever? Definitely!

Gansa – February was P’s birthday month. For the second weekend of Feb, we had a sleepover at her condo in McKinley. SHE SURPRISED US WITH SO MUCH CUTE STUFF WTH. She basically pimped out the condo with inspirational quotes and rainbows and junk food we could munch on while sharing about our, ehem, love lives, and watching Silver Linings Playbook and Girls. She called it her “You’re Just Awesome” Party. Well, P, you do know you’re the awesomest, right? Haha.

The week after was her actual birthday, and we decided to surprise her by leading her to R’s condo when the clock struck 12, and showering her with silly gifts and rainbow cupcakes and balloons. HA! GOT YOU BACK!

PKFC – We held a Pirate Night at my house last Feb. 1. We basically just dressed up like pirates and exchanged movies and music and random intellectual stories. I LOVE MY FRIENDS. :)) M was also back in town, so we hung out after one rehearsal day. 🙂

PHP – This also falls under this category just because I got to hang out with the nerdy folks of Hogwarts Philippines again. Where else can you find people willing to dress up as characters from the best novel ever? And not just willing, but PROUD? :))

Sponge Cola – I love Sponge Cola, you all know that. Har. And I got to see my friend Y again when they had a gig at a mall in the south. His girlfriend came by to watch as well. Small world story: this was the same weekend as ABS-CBN’s concert. I got to see a certain person practically the whole weekend, without really meaning to. Go figure. :))

Sooooo… what’s left to talk about? Non-platonic love? Oh right… Hmm…

What’s there to tell?

Oh, I got a haircut. So that happened. LOL.

New hair, new me!

How’s 2013 been treating you so far? Good, I hope?

Till the next entry! Au revoir!

I’m ready! I’m ready! :D

I am so excited for 2013! Although I know it’s just psychological and I can basically start anew any old day I want, I have a thing for exact dates and new beginnings. Like, whenever I want to start (and fail) at a new exercise routine, I always start on a Monday. I get thrown off course when I start on a Tuesday or a Thursday. Just like when I don’t like eating using mismatched utensils… or reading a to-do list that already has a lot of its items checked off. OMG I AM A PSYCHOTIC PSYCHOLOGY MAJOR OKAY.

(In total fairness to me, I am slowly getting over the mismatched utensils thing.)

Ready for 2013!
Ready for 2013!

ANYWAY, just like Spongebob, I’M READY! I’M READY! So ready for 2013! I’m already slowly building my dreamboard and I’ve already gotten a new planner: a Slate Planner! 😀 I’m yet to deface the cover like I did the 2012 one. XD Actually pretty bummed I couldn’t get a Navi Planner this 2013; I liked the space for writing but I kinda hate the whole garter thing on the side so… yeah. But anyhoo, I’m sorta glad I didn’t get one ’cause the Slate Planner’s pretty awesome! Such cute doodles and trivia, and new websites and stuff to discover monthly (or as I turn a page — but I don’t want to spoil myself, LOLZ). 😀

Still in the process of creating my usual year-end post. Hopefully I get to finish it on time. For now, I shall leave you with another playlist I made, this time for New Year’s Eve! It’s happy and dance-y and majestic at some point. 😀 I hope you like it! 🙂

Single Girl Diaries: She’s Not Afraid

Just because One Direction’s new album makes me so happy right now. ALSO. THIS SONG IS SO PERFECT. Did you guys make this for me? Aww. #WhatAFeeler :))

She sneaks out in the middle of the night, yeah
Tight dress with the top cut low
She’s addicted to the feeling of letting go
Oh, oh
Let it go

She walks in and the room just lights up
But she don’t want anyone to know
That I’m the only one that gets to take her home
Oh, oh
Take her home

But every time I tell her that I want more
She closes the door

She’s not afraid of all the attention
She’s not afraid of running wild
How come she’s so afraid of falling in love?
She’s not afraid of scary movies
She likes the way we kiss in the dark
But she’s so afraid of f-f-falling in love
Oh, oh, oh, oh

Maybe she’s just trying to test me
Wanna see how hard I’m gonna work
Wanna see if I can really tell
How much she’s worth
What you’re worth
Or maybe all her friends have told her
Don’t get close or he’ll just break your heart
But either way, she’s teasing me
And it’s just so hard
So hard

Cause every time I tell her how I feel
She says it’s not real

She’s not afraid of all the attention
She’s not afraid of running wild
How come she’s so afraid of falling in love?
She’s not afraid of scary movies
She likes the way we kiss in the dark
But she’s so afraid of f-f-falling in love
Oh, oh, oh, oh

What about all the things we say
Talking on the phone so late?
I can’t let her get away from me
Oh, oh

When I say that I can’t do it no more
She’s back at my door

She’s not afraid of all the attention
She’s not afraid of running wild
How come she’s so afraid of falling in love?
She’s not afraid of scary movies
She likes the way we kiss in the dark
But she’s so afraid of f-f-falling in love
Oh, oh, oh, oh

She’s not afraid
She’s not afraid
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
