TRAVEL TUESDAY: #VXSafetyDance #PALnonstopLondon

I am coming out from my unintentional blogging hiatus to bring you this week’s spazz-worthy travel news!

A few days ago, Virgin America came out with this awesome new safety video:

Why I think this is effective:

★ Music can always help grab people’s attention. Plus points if the song’s catchy. More points if you include awesome dancing.

★ Seriously, though, that chorus is CATCHY. I’m still singing it right now. @_@

★ Frequent flyers often overlook safety videos since they think they already know chizz. First-time flyers, on the other hand, may view this with anxiety (like a ride at Magic Mountain, but 35,000 feet in the air). It’s good to be informed or reminded every now and then. It’s a win-win ’cause you’re also entertained in the process. 🙂

★ They made a good call in getting the kids to rap/explain the oxygen & smoking parts ’cause those are usually ones that people glaze over (by people, I really mean me, LOL).

★ Equally effective is the robot rap/dance ’cause then you actually pay attention to how a life vest is worn and inflated.

★ I love the choreo and blocking, especially for the latter part. Gave me chills. 😀

AND I found out, by watching this video, that it was actually directed by Jon M. Chu (of Step Up and LXD fame). Yep. Now I get it.

Philippine Airlines came out with an entertaining safety video a few years ago, too. I wonder if they’re going to change it again, now that they’ve come out with new uniforms for the FAs?

Oh, wait, did you know? They changed their uniforms from beige to blue just yesterday, in line with their new route to — wait for it — LONDON. @_@ YES. THE LAND OF TEA, CRUMPETS, HARRY POTTER, SHERLOCK HOLMES, DOCTOR WHO, J.K. ROWLING, DANIEL RADCLIFFE, EMMA WATSON, BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH, TOM HIDDLESTON, AND MANY, MANY MORE.

I’m sorry, wait, let me take a moment to catch my breath. Here be pictures to look at while I do so:

OMG I JUST CAN’T TAKE THIS, OKAY? I have been wanting to go to London since 2001 but couldn’t, since PAL closed all their flights to Europe a few years prior. BUT NOW THIS? THIIIIISSSSS. MY HEART IS DOING SO MANY CARTWHEELS. My London 2015 adventure with friends is slowly becoming a reality! Mewmewmewmew. BRB crying.

So, anyway, yeah. These were worth spazzing about. Planning to book soon? Take me with you, please. HAHAHAHA.

Oh, travel. My heart longs for thee. ♥

MUSIC MONDAY: Harmony. Yum.

Have you seen this?!

It came out two weeks ago and as usual, because I am Ms. Late Poster, I’m only blogging about it now. (I mentioned it on Twitter, though. You should totally follow me. New knowledge everyday, guaranteed!) LOL.

Anyway. My ears died and went to heaven when I first listened to this. They had to resurrect and die again ’cause I kept listening to the song a couple more times in the succeeding days. I love this cover so much! Lorde’s song is already quite catchy on its own, but when Pentatonix did this with that TDF harmony. Ugh. My feels.

I love love love love love harmony. It just makes everything better. I was actually dubbed the resident harmony maker in our pop group. I also spent 8 years of my life (and counting) in the Chorale. My dad also ALWAYS adds harmonies to songs he hears on the radio (or wherever)… so you can basically understand where I’m coming from.

Listening to Pentatonix’s songs, in general, actually gives me so many feels. I’ve always admired people who can do ahmahzing things with their voice. I’ve also always had dreams of being part of a group like this — with each member being increasingly sensitive of their part in a harmony. Through the years, though, I learned that this isn’t something you can expect in an instant. It takes practice. And inborn talent, I guess. LOL. I’ve found people who fit the bill, but I’m not so sure they’re quite interested in the other kind of group I dream of becoming a part of — a vintage close harmony group.

Last year, I had an Overtones/Puppini Sisters phase (which never really died, just that I was so SUPER obsessed with them that time). This year, I heard of Baihana — a local close harmony group. This was the first video of theirs that I watched:

Pretty fabulous, right?! Found myself stalking their SoundCloud a few days ago just because. Super loved this:

HUHU THE AWESOMENESS I CAN’T. I seriously believe I was born in the wrong era. Or that I was a flapper girl in my past life. Huhuhuhu someone please be in a close harmony group with me!!!

Harmony. Yum.

MUSIC MONDAY: Postmodern Jukebox

This vintage take on Miley Cyrus’ We Can’t Stop made its rounds on the internet last month:

Seeing how everyone at that time was gagging over Miley’s classy VMA performance, this version was welcomed with open arms. I think partly because, aside from it sounding so quirky tune-wise, it also represented an era that was modest and classy. Which is the complete opposite of, ehem, Destiny Hope’s current phase. Har.

Anyway, I checked out this guy’s (Scott Bradlee) YouTube account. Turns out, he and his friends had covered a lot of songs already. Mostly making jazzy/bluesy renditions of contemporary pop songs. It’s pretty amazing! Like, this guy could possibly be my frand in real life ’cause of our similar tastes in music. (I still honestly feel like I live in the wrong era.)

Check out these other ahmahhz videos:

Puhhreeety cool! BRB dressing up like a flapper girl. LOL.

FANGIRL FRIDAY: Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Us This Weekend

The magical world is abuzz once again! Originally (at least in our part of the world), it was only because of the release of the 15th Anniversary Harry Potter Scholastic Book Covers. But yesterday, OH, YESTERDAY, this announcement was posted on J.K. Rowling’s official Facebook page:

Warner Bros. announced on 12th September 2013 that J.K. Rowling would be making her screenwriting debut with ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’, the first in a new film series which is part of their expanded creative partnership with J.K. Rowling. The films will be inspired by Harry Potter’s Hogwarts textbook of the same name, and will feature the book’s fictitious author, Newt Scamander.

“It all started when Warner Bros. came to me with the suggestion of turning ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ into a film. I thought it was a fun idea, but the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of ‘Fantastic Beasts’, realized by another writer was difficult. Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt. As hard-core Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favourite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood.

As I considered Warners’ proposal, an idea took shape that I couldn’t dislodge. That is how I ended up pitching my own idea for a film to Warner Bros.

Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world. The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway.

I particularly want to thank Kevin Tsujihara of Warner Bros. for his support in this project, which would not have happened without him. I always said that I would only revisit the wizarding world if I had an idea that I was really excited about and this is it.”

So when I read this the first time, and Evanna Lynch’s crazy fangirl tweets — OH MY GOSH HERE ARE SOME OF THEM, BTW:

CRAY, RIGHT? I love her so much! Way to represent, Loony! LOL.

But anyway, when I read these, it took me at least an hour to digest them and go full fangirl. LIKE OMG YOU GUISE, THINK ABOUT IT: QUEEN ROWLING. IS WRITING. THIS. MOVIE. SHE. IS. WRITING. IT. IT CAN NOT GET ANY MORE LEGIT THAN THIS. AAAAANNNNND it’s going to be set in New York! NUEVA. FREAKIN’. YORK. IF THEY CAST BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH AS NEWT SCAMANDER, TOO, I WILL PROBABLY DIE.

Okay. Recover. Inhale. Exhale. K, I’m good.

I AM SO EXCITED TO DISCUSS THIS WITH MY DORK FRIENDS ON SUNDAY.

Oh wait! Yes! Sunday! Join us at the Manila International Book Fair! We, along with Scholastic and National Bookstore, will be officially launching the 15th Anniversary Covers. 😀 Check the deets below:

There will be games and cake and errthing! #EXCITEMENT

And this post, witches and warlocks, is a preview of what I’m like when I talk about Harry Potter. I’m not even giving my 100% yet. LOL. See me and my Hogwarts Philippines friends go full dork on the 15th. Hihi.

Ahh, indeed, the magic will forever live on. ♥

Wicked Wednesday

So so so so SO. I. Have been obsessing. Over Wicked lately. For so many different reasons.

1. Megan Hilty as Glinda, and her version of Popular. Guys, please. You just can’t NOT love this. (Yes, this calls for a double negative.)

2. These #FlyGirl episodes by Lindsay Mendez (a.k.a. Broadway’s current Elphaba). The last episode of the series was just uploaded by broadway.com a few days ago and now I’m a sad muffin ’cause I’ve learned so much about the people behind it, the work they put into it, and how the cast and crew got to where they are now and just. Why does everything have to end (cough Smash cough — hey, Lindsay appeared there too! :D).

I also super duper love Lindsay Mendez’s enthusiasm. There’s nothing more admirable than someone who is so passionate about his/her craft. It’s just so inspiring. :3 Thank you for letting us fly with you, Lindsay!

3. Wicked mania here in the Philippines over last month’s announcement that the hit musical is finally coming to Manila. I had already seen two big-ass billboards on my way to the business district the other day and it’s kinda cray. The purist in me says I should just wait to go back to New York to see it, but the cray Wicked fangirl in me says I should just TOTALLY GO FOR IT. But alas, I don’t have extra funds for that just yet. But we’ll see. I’m optimistic that September will be the month. 😀

4. Last, but not least, this viral video of Kristin Chenoweth singing For Good with a random audience member at her Hollywood Bowl concert. The full story can be found over here but basically, she randomly picked out this girl, Sarah, from the audience, didn’t know she could actually sing, and well, got the shock of a lifetime.

I GOT SO MANY GOOSEBUMPS WATCHING THIS. I JUST CAN’T PLEASE. Dreaming of the day I get to experience this myself with Kristin or, say, Megan Hilty? Idina Menzel? Lindsay Mendez? Lea Salonga? Please, pretty please, with sprinkles on top? 😀

Sigh. And because I got so many feels watching the video (I’ve been watching it everyday since I found it, BTW), I was inspired to record this (a.k.a. my pathetic attempt at channeling my inner Elphaba):

Hope you’re having a very Wicked Wednesday! TTFN! 😀

MUSIC MONDAY: Classical Music And Then Some

You guise, check out these fab videos I watched over the weekend. One is a classical take on Lady Gaga’s song, Applause (which I find extremely catchy, BTW); the other, sheer awesomeness by Juilliard alumni. Sigh.

I’m not sure if you know this but I LOVE classical music. Being part of the Chorale from elementary to high school + being friends with the school’s orchestra members + listening to the Harry Potter soundtracks exposed me to, and made me appreciate, the genre. When I became part of a pop orchestra in college, my love for it just grew, as well as the appreciation for jazz/big band music and pop-classical fusions. Although I don’t completely understand the technicalities behind it, I still appreciate it and can pretty much distinguish the good from the bad, the simple from the elaborate. 🙂

Another thing I love is when classically-trained musicians tackle popular music. It just makes me all giddy inside, the idea of them taking on simple pop pieces and combining it with their skills and knowledge, to basically produce musical bad-assery. It’s like, “Lady Gaga song? Btchplz. Lemme add some violins to that. Here.” *throws newly-Sibelius-ed sheet music (or not, ’cause most of them can play by ear)*

Sigh. My underdeveloped right brain says HELLO while silently weeping in a corner.

Speaking of classical music, concert season is starting for the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra! Their opening night is this Friday already, 8PM, at Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo. They’ll be playing the following pieces:

Dukas – Fanfare from La Péri
Liszt – Les Préludes
Vivaldi – Flute Concerto
Monti – Czardas
Guzman – Flutes of the World
Tchaikovsky – Symphony No. 6 in B Minor “Pathétique”

EEP! Excited for Czardas please! Let’s go! Let’s go! Let’s go! See you at the Cultural Center of the Philippines this Friday and in the months to come! 😀 Here’s the  schedule for the rest of the season, FYI:

Yay, classical music! <3

MTV VMAs 2013: Bye, Bye, Bye!

So, like, let me bring back my 12-year-old self for a bit while we talk about this year’s VMAs.

But before that, a quick recap (of the stuff I actually cared about): Lady Gaga’s performance was theatrically stunning, as always. Taylor Swift was apparently caught on cam mouthing something like “Shut the f up” while One Direction was presenting an award onstage (which her BFF Selena won, btw). Miley’s performance became the stuff of people’s nightmares. Taylor Swift won Best Female Video for I Knew You Were Trouble and indirectly said something about Harry Styles in her speech (classy). One Direction won Best Song of The Summer for Best Song Ever. Macklemore, Mary Lambert, and Jennifer Hudson sang about equality. Adam Lambert and his beard presented an award. JGL presented an award (with that voice). Katy Perry performed Roar under the Brooklyn Bridge.

But probably the most brilliant and most electric of all would have to be JUSTIN. FREAKIN’. TIMBERLAKE’S. PERFORMANCE.

(Here come the 12-year-old feels, beeteeduhbs.)

So that was what? A 20-minute non-stop performance by the President of Pop, yes? Can I please just give you an accurate .gif of what my face was like while I was watching this?

No, correction, there is no accurate .gif. But when he came out, I was like:

And then I was like:

And when *NSYNC came out, I was just like:

And when they started performing, I was all:

Source: tumblr.com
Source: tumblr.com

The precious thing about it was seeing the crowd’s reaction to the performance. The camera showed Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, and One Direction’s reactions and just, THINK ABOUT IT. Before there were all these acts, there was *NSYNC. Before Gaga’s theatricality, Taylor’s break-up songs, Selena’s eye candy videos, and 1D’s hold on the tweenyboppers of today, there was *NSYNC. THEY LISTENED AND GREW UP TO *NSYNC (not sure about 1D ’cause they’re like, half a decade younger than me). This isn’t new or anything; I’m sure older people would say the same thing about *NSYNC reacting to musicians who came before them BUT THIS IS MY CHILDHOOD OKAY SO BUGGER OFF.

But seriously, though, Justin Timberlake. I was such a huge fan of his (and *NSYNC) and Britbrit back in my elementary days. I even joined some Yahoo! Groups (yes!) that shipped JT and Britney. (I WAS CRAY, OKAY.) And seeing him excel at everything he tries his hand at is just really amazing and inspiring to watch. I didn’t think he’d be a good actor, but he got that one down pat. Couple it with his already awesome singing and dancing? I CAN’T, PLEASE. HE DESERVES THOSE TWO AWARDS. HE DESERVES. EVERYTHING.

So yes, THANKS A LOT, JT AND THE REST OF *NSYNC (and his back-up dancers too, btw, SO GREAT). YOU GAVE ME SO MANY FEELS TODAY AND NOW I THINK I’LL JUST GO AHEAD AND BAWL MY EYES OUT TO YOUR GREATEST HITS. BYE.
